While exploring Bridgeside, a Victorian Mansion, Sheryl Locke Holmes and Dot Watson discover a diary, which reveals dark secrets about Sheryl’s parents and the house’s owner, Ruby, who allegedly hung herself in the attic. A newspaper clipping stating “You’re next!” is found. Someone wants Sheryl dead, but who, and why?

This time Sheryl won’t stop until she gets answers–and avenges her friend’s death.

Excerpt:

With the next flash of light, Sheryl caught a glimpse of a familiar face and gasped. Oh my God. It couldn’t be. She had to have been wrong.

Disoriented, she stumbled backward, bumped her hip into the corner of the desk, and fell to the floor. When she tried to get to her feet, she cracked her head on the desk. Stars whirled in front of her eyes, alternating with that face she’d seen. She blinked and blinked to stop the kaleidoscope whizzing around. But the next flash came and she saw no one. Thunder rumbled, lightning lit up the heavens and the windows.

Suddenly, a dark figure stepped out of the shadows and ran across the room.

Dot gasped.

Before Sheryl could give chase to the person dressed in dark clothes, the overhead light came on and Roger stood at the doorway. She searched the room. Now, Dot was nowhere in sight.

“I knew you’d come,” Roger said.

“Where have you been the last couple of years?”

“You need to let this vendetta go and move on. I did.” He glanced around the library.

“Amber was one of my dearest friends. I want to know who murdered her.”

“Don’t underestimate these people.”

“Who, Roger? God knows you don’t have the balls or the brains to have done that to Amber. Tell me who?” She watched a wave of crimson creep up his neck.

“I tried my best to protect her.” He sat down in the desk chair and sighed. “It’s true, it’s my fault she was murdered. They wouldn’t listen to me.”

“Who, Roger?”

Exline’s tale unfolds easily and is well-paced. The writes seductive love scenes that tantalize, but she does not over use them. All in all, a string romantic story with a hint of darker elements. I look forward to exploring other works by Cassie Exline.

This story has it all- setting, likeable characters, and a plot that will intrigue readers within all genres.

      I picked up a few of the petals and inhaled. It was the same aroma as long ago. The memories washed over me. If I closed my eyes and thought back, I knew I’d see that night as if it were just happening. I’d hear all those sounds. The whippoorwill, the owl and our bodies coming together as Alex filled me with his seed. My eyes closed and I recalled his moans of passion.

    “Oh God! Oh! God!” Alex groaned and slammed into me, not stopping until his body had gone still. He leaned down to kiss me. “I love you, Mrs. Harris.”

    “I love you, Mr. Harris,” I replied. “And it’s too soon to use Mrs. Harris.”

    “Of course, my dear.”

   “I expect to hear that phrase being used a lot after we’re married.”

   He chuckled. “You’re so adorable when you’re bossy.” He stood and slipped on his briefs.

    I leaned back on my elbows and watched him. He was so handsome.

    Alex picked up his trousers, inserted one leg at a time and pulled them up. “You keep looking as sexy as you are right now, I’m going to ravish you all over again.”

    “If that’s supposed to scare me, it doesn’t.” I squeezed my breasts together and pinched my nipples between my thumbs and forefingers and pulled.

   He groaned and licked his lips.

   A loud crack rang out. I squealed and noticed a strange expression cross Alex’s face. His mouth formed a perfect O as our eyes met.

   I watched in horror as Alex’s hands reached toward me and his knees buckled. From that moment on, things seemed to move in slow motion. His body swayed, ever so slightly, and blood seeped between the fingers of the hand he pressed against the wound in his stomach. I could see the crimson as it trickled down the back of his hand. Then he pitched forward and fell on top of me. My screams seemed to echo in the air as I held him. In seconds, everything had been turned upside down.

   “Guuunnn,” Alex muttered.

   My mind was numb. It hadn’t registered we were being robbed. I knew Alex kept a pistol in his boots. He had shown me how to use it, although I never thought I would have to pull the trigger. I reached toward his boot.
